Pretty decent list of winners this year, as it looks like. I have not read a lot this year, but I'll certainly look out for some of this stuff.

A memory called Empire - sounds cool.

This is how you loose the time war - has been recommended to me more times than I can count. I'll get it out now.

Poppy war books - sound amazing, bought them right away

LaGuardia - looks somewhat fun, has anybody here read it?

Apparently now that the puppies are no longer around, GRRM is the new big Hugo bad? Idk, I think he is a decent writer and he really is into Hugo history. But then I only listened to part of his presentation and I have not read up on the recent discourse. I'd rather just enjoy the winners.

LaGuardia is really good, although it's more slice-of-life and less dramatic than you'd expect from the publicity and blurb.

ETA: Forgot to mention that it's set in the same universe as Okorafor's prose novel Lagoon, if you've read it (it isn't necessary to have read it to understand the graphic novel).

I haven't read Lagoon, but I think I will look into LaGuardia :)

Also, thinking of the kerfuffle when AO3 got a Hugo and people got miffed at AO3 writers calling themselves Hugo winners...

...they gave the "Best series" for the 1945 retro Hugos to the Cthulhu mythos by "Lovecraft, Derleth, and others". Which means, since the Cthulhu mythos is public domain, that anyone who has ever incorporated the Cthulhu mythos into their writing is now a Hugo winner.

I wonder who I'm supposed to contact to get my statue.

Near as I can figure - GRR Martin did a spiel on John W. Campbell - who got an honorable mention (Campbell was the racist sci-fi writer than Jeannette Ng called out in her acceptance speech last year - which she also won for.) And a spiel on Lovecraft - who is another racist and anti-semitic old school writer, long dead. He kind of rambled, and he mis-pronounced a lot of names. And they forgot to do a video for one of the winners.

It pissed off a lot of people on Twitter, no one else seemed to care that much.

Yeah, I saw the outrage on twitter. Like I said I didn't listen to all of GRRMs presentation, so I did not hear anything on Campbell or Lovevcraft and while I know about Lovecraft, I don't know anything on Campbell, I trust Ng is right.

I guess my outrage capacity is limited these days.

It's not really that much outrage. brithistorian had referenced it on DW, in passing. So I googled it. And it was hard to find. It's kind of referenced in passing. No where near the sad puppy debacle, or the RITA debacle earlier this year. Just some grumbling about the host annoying everyone instead of just presenting. Someone apparently edited the broadcast after it aired - so you can just see who won.

It was silly.

It seems it was mostly a thing on twitter.

The RITA thing completely passed me by.

The RITA thing - was the big Romance Writer's Association meltdown in December, mostly on Twitter as well. Actually all of these genre related meltdowns are on Twitter - apparently all the professional genre novelists are camped out on Twitter, along with their genre associations, fans, publishers, and the media. One of the many reasons Twitter gives me a headache - there's nothing worse than a bored out of their minds writer. ;-)

Ah, ok. I follow a few writers on twitter, such as Ellen Kushner or NK Jemisin, but I think the romance bubble passes me by.

Twitter is way to dramatic for my liking. And I do not like the way the left tears each other apart there.

It was Courtney Milan (Chinese-American) - who instigated the Romance War on Twitter - I was following Courtney (a progressive romance novelist) and shipperx (who used to be on DW and was from the Buffy fandom), which is how I found out about it. Also Cat Sebastian, who is another progressive romance novelist. Kind of similar to Kushner, but more vocal and far more social justice activist.

I dislike Twitter. But, if you are into social justice or social activism - it's an excellent platform for it. I'll give it that.
