News from Tirol

The Corona virus is spreading rapidly in my area in the last few days. We are very close to italy and apparently it spread badly in skiing resorts and on student parties.
I don't like to admit it but I am scared. In Italy people are dying because they do not have enough intensive care units and the way it looks now, by next week things could look here in Innsbruck like they do in northern italy. The university closed down for students and they are closing down schools next week. I honestly hope it helps but I fear things will get a lot worse before they get better again. I am really scared for my eldery parents and my asthmatic sister. And for the first time in my life, I really would like to have a car, so I can get groceries to them without having to use public transport.

Date: 2020-03-12 06:18 pm (UTC)Things over here aren't quite at panic level yet, but with half the population going "eh, it's just the flu" and the other half going "WE NEED TO SHUT DOWN SOCIETY AND LIVE OFF WALLPAPER IMMEDIATELY" I'm almost more scared of people than viruses at the moment. Right now all I can do about it is make sure I have enough food to survive quarantine if needed and wash my hads... but I'm glad my parents live deep in the woods with their own well.

Date: 2020-03-12 06:34 pm (UTC)Italy however...it's dystopic. People with low chances of survival are not even admitted anymore. And here it is just starting but 6 students at the university where I work have it and the clinic is no longer giving out surgery appointments. I really hope that closing down the university and the schools will slow things down.
And I'm also glad my parents live in the countryside. And all my swedish relatives are at least filthy rich. So I hope they will stay save too.

Date: 2020-03-13 01:22 pm (UTC)There is not going to be a shortage of food or anything. But we need to reduce social contact to flatten the curve.
And now people are hoarding toilet paper and food on one hand. And on the other hand people are having Corona parties.

Date: 2020-03-14 01:04 pm (UTC)I hope everyone you care about stays healthy.
I am very angry at our local authorities. The reckless tourism greed complex has infected hundres of people around Europe, mainly Skandinavians. And the dark number in Tirol must be insane.
Should you know anyone who went skiing in Austria in the last two weeks, make them get tested.

Date: 2020-03-15 10:33 pm (UTC)Ironically, just before I read this comment I learned that my niece and her husband had returned from a skiing trip to Austria and gone into self-isolation, both feeling very unwell.
The only upside to this - assuming they only have a mild dose of the virus - is that she's an A&E doctor and will have developed some immunity before she has to return to work. :(

My niece and husband are recovering, thanks. Fortunately, they are very healthy individuals. Just as well, as they are going to have a very difficult time when they return to work. She's an A&E doctor and he's an army officer.

Date: 2020-03-19 08:40 am (UTC)I was sick for the last three days but with no direct contact person I could get no test. My sister was tested two days ago and we are still waiting for her result.
I really wish we had more tests.
