Unsavory language question

I'm still struggling with the subtleties of the English language, so I have a question for the native english speakers on my flist. I was reading slash lately (big surprise) and I was wondering about some words, the terms "slut" and "whore" in particular. In German (like in French or Italian) most nouns have a gender. The translations of both this terms would be female in German, so they sound a bit awkward to me, when I'm reading them in slashfiction.
So I'm wondering, do they have a gender implication in English too, or would you say you perceive them as gender neutral? I dimly remember Brian being called a man-whore once, so I suspect that at least whore has a female implication,somehow.

Yes, they are feminine, but are being used because there is no real equivalent male word, not one that has the same (negative) connotations anyway - 'stud' for instance would create a very different image.

Thank you for the explanation, this really had me wondering.
So it's not just German, that's automatically associating the negative aspects to the female and the positive to male. *sighs, kicks annoying sexist world*

they the way they would be in German, but are considered feminine attributes - which plays a lot into the power dynamics that seem so important in slash (I'm by no means an expert in those though).

Yes, that's clear. In German both words have feminine endings, so it would sound maybe like calling a man a stewardess, or something like that. I suppose it comes a little easier in English to switch away from the usual gender implication.

I think it depends on the person using the language and the reader's perception of the words themselves. "Slut" and "whote" like "bimbo" and "floozy" generally apply to females, but I myself use them gender neutrally so it doesn't look awkward to me when I see something written where a guy is being called a slut. I know a lot of man-whores. XD

Hee, me too. And I usually even use the german words to describe males (that deserve it). I guess, we can only change language and it's implications by using it.

Until very recently, you'd never hear 'slut' or 'whore' applied to a man. Even now, I virtually never hear that kind of usage outside of A) fandom, and B) gay male culture. There are roughly equivalent male terms (horndog, gigolo), but they have far, far less degrading/insulting implications (implying that a man is sexually aggressive or promiscuous is very often a compliment rather than an insult.)

I note that in slash these 'feminine' insults are usually applied to a male character who's being portrayed in the stereotypically female role. And then I kind of weep for humanity. :/

sad and true. The same behaviour gets a negative association on females and a positive on males. Probably it's not so bad that the terms start to get mixed up.

Yes, that was why i was posting the question, because while I sometimes like the whole powerplay thing, I don't like it associated with gender stereotypes. This just tends to put me off and then I thought that maybe it was rather my sexist translation/interpretation than the actual meaning.

Which language is English if you are used to La Le infront to say that is it masculine and femine, you don't need to in English

A much easier one then French, where they just randomly seem to change the sexes, which ends up in stuff like vagina being a male word.

It's interesting to me to read the comments you've had to this, particularly as a slash writer.

I would agree that the words probably have traditionally had a more female slant, but I personally would use it with male and female friends (say if I was joking around with them and saying, "you are such a slut!" etc). And I've certainly heard the terms applied to men.

When I use the words in slash, it isn't in any way to "feminise" the characters. I would use it as a general insult. "Bitch" would be more likely to be used in a feminising way, I would think. But I think British English may be different to, say, American English. For example, terms like "cunt" are VERY female focussed in American English, but in the UK, 9 out of 10 times a person would be referring to a man when they used that word. Over here, an insult tends to be just that - an insult, without a whole lot of greater meaning behind it.

Anyway, that's a ramble and a half! Sorry!

I think, I get to the conclusion that the words are traditionally female, but less so in English than in German (and of course there's a difference between american and british English too, because it never can be that easy).
And that they start to get mixed up. Like "nurse" or something. That started out female too but is used for both sexes now, if I got it correctly. And if it feminises a character in slash would rather depend on the context, than just the use of the word.

Hi, wir irren Buffy Anhänger sind tatsächlich ein seltenes Völkchen im deutschen Sprachraum. Ich bin eigentlich aus Österreich, mach aber grade Diplomarbeit in Göttingen.

Deutsche Fanfiction? hm, ich muss sagen ich hab nie wirklich gesucht, weil ich die charakter stimmen mehr auf deutsch im kopf hab, ich weiss aber das edgehead73 auch aus deutschland ist und ein paar deutsche Sachen geschrieben hat. Sie kennt sicher ein Archiv, ob da was gutes dabei ist kann ich allerdings nicht sagen.

Aber ich kann dir tonnenweise geniale englische Geschichten empfehlen :)

Ich bin aus Bayern (München! Yay!), is ja auch so ähnlich wie Österreich :] Was studierst du denn?

Ich hab eigtl auch von Anfang an nur englische FF gelesen (nur auf Grund des Lerneffekts höhö), die sind, genauso wie die DVDs, auf englisch einfach besser! Aber i.wie hab ichs komisch gefunden, dass es fast keine ff auf deutsch gibt und hab mal gesucht..es war furchtbar..@.@ *kopfschüttel* Da bleib ich lieber bei den englischen! Dann schau ich auch mal bei edgehead73 vorbei.

Ohja, empfehl mir mal was! Ich bin bei ein paar -für mich- wirklich genialen Autoren stehen geblieben und find i.wie keine neuen, die mich so einfangen wie die: shapinglight, peasant_, kidcyclone und hello_spikey sind so meine standartanlaufstelle!
(und natürlich noch viele bei allaboutspike.com, aber..wird ja nich mehr upgedated..:[ *grummel*)

In österreich is Buffy überhaupt nie im normalen Tv gelaufen (und ich hatte nie kabel), ich bin erst darauf gestossen, nachdem ich total firefly süchtig war. Ins Fandom hab ich mich dann aber erst bei Buffy wirklich reingestürzt (ahem, nur eine ganz kleine Spike obsession, ganz harmlos, ich schwöre :) ).
Zum Glück kann man ja mittlerweile alles runterladen und das Fernsehen und seine kuriose sendungsauswahl einfach ignorieren)

In Österreich wohne ich in Innsbruck (wo ich in einem Monat auch wieder hinziehe), da sind wir also fast nachbarn! Ich studiere Chemie und du?

Ja, die deutsche Fanfiction klingt immer einigermassen seltsam, grade bei Spike is ja der Spikespeak mit den ganzen luvs und pets und bloody whatnotevers der halbe Spaß, auf deutsch klingt das meistens holprig. Ausserdem kann ich mir nicht helften, aber irgendwie hören sich explizite Sexszenen für mich auf englisch einfach heisser an. Ich glaub ein paar sachen könnte ich da auf deutsch gar nicht vernünftig formulieren.

Wegen Empfehlungen abseits der leute die du genannt hast (die ich alle super finde):

Girlpire: Friday von ihr is glaub ich die beste Geschichte die ich im fandom je gelesen habe. Da stimmt einfach alles, cooler spannender plot, ausgefeilte Charaktere und Spangel porn zum dahinschmelzen.

ash_carpenter is die absolute Königin des DirtyBadWrong auf LJ, in letzter zeit schreibt sie mehr AUs, aber in ihrem Archiv gibt es auch viele Geschichten die im Serienverse spielen.

darklingdawns hat auch sehr viele coole Geschichten auf ihrem LJ und wir haben auch unser eigenes kleines slashiges Epos zusammen verfasst (der outcome von nächstelangen icq sessions :) )

Magst du nur slash, oder auch Spuffy?

Eine meiner absoluten Lieblingsautorinnen auf LJ ist rahirah, sie hat mehr oder weniger ihr eigenens universum nach season 5 kreiert. Ihre plots und charakterisierungen sind einfach unglaublich gut. Sie schafft es, dass ich sogar Sachen die ich sonst nie lesen würde (babyfic!) absolut genial finde. Sie schreibt spike wirklich umwerfend gut, am liebsten würd ich die frau sofort einstellen um die S8 comics zu texten.

Ich texte gerne auch auf deutsch rum, allerdings mehr meine eigenen Geschichten und keine fanfiction. Wie siehts bei dir aus? Schreibst du auch selbst, oder möchtest du?

Es is mir fast peinlich zu sagen, dass ich noch nie Firefly angeschaut hab..
Mit der Spike obsession stehst du aber echt alleine da!! Hörst du? Allein!! :D

Ich studier noch nichts - noch - aber im Sommersemester fang ich mit Germanistik an, seltsamerweise freu ich mich schon end drauf. Kann an meinem kotzlangweiligen Job liegen. Chemie..wow..da bin ich immer so ein 2 Punkte Kandidat gewesen. ^^

Noch schlimmer bei den deutschen ff is aber, wenn die ganzen "luvs, pets und whatnotevers" eingebaut werden, á la: Spike sagte: "Bloody hell, luv!" Des is echt so..falsch, einfach falsch..*kopfschüttel*
Ohja, die ersten auf englisch gelesenen Sexszenen waren echt eine Offenbarung. (wenn man so seine ersten moans, gasps und whimpers nachgeschlagen hat..klingt einfach besser als auf deutsch) Da hat man nicht so des Gefühl, als ob man in einen Kitschroman gefallen wäre, aber auch nich nach billigem porn - sondern so die richtige Mischung! =)

Viele Hardcore Buffy fans haben ja mit Firefly nicht so viel am Hut, aber mir hats sehr gefallen und es war eine tolle Einstriegsdroge in die Whedon Universen. Leider hatten die Charaktere nicht so viel Zeit sich zu entwickeln.

Oh, wow, Germanistik, da wundert es mich nicht, dass dich die deutsche Fanfic szene zum schaudern bringt. In der Englischen gibts zwar auch viel Müll, dafür aber halt auch echte Meisterwerke.

Bei deutschen Sexszenen muss ich oft manchmal einfach nur mehr lachen, wenn wieder irgendein pulsierendes Glied sonstwelche Kunstückchen vollführt :)
Obwohl man sich da natürlich auch auf englisch ganz schön seltsam ausdrücken kann. Es gibt da eine LJ Comm, namens weeping_cock, die der Sammlung von abstrusen Sexszenen gewidmet is.

Scheint ich konnte dir eh kaum noch was neues empfehlen. Ein Trip durch ash' archiv lohhnt sich auf jeden Fall. Ich steh auch nicht auf Lindsey, aber sie hat auch sehr viel Spangel und Dreier geschrieben.
