Yeah. I think you're right in your assessment of Putin as an ideologue. I was listening to Masha Gessen on a podcast the other day, and they said that he's also been virtually alone since Covid started--like, literally not allowing anyone in the same room as him most of the time. That'll mess with anyone's mind.
